Hallmark registration certifies the purity of gold and silver articles as per Indian Standards, overseen by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). To ensure quality, manufacturers and sellers must obtain hallmark certification, which involves inspection and testing conducted by a BIS-approved assaying and hallmarking center.

Hallmarking is the process of certifying the purity of precious metals like gold and silver, following specific regulatory standards. A hallmark, or quality mark, is stamped on the article as proof of its purity. This process includes assaying the metal content and fineness, thus ensuring consumers receive genuine, high-quality items and helping prevent fraud.

The BIS has introduced a new hallmarking method that features a unique identification number, a BIS hallmark, and the metal’s purity. Since 2019, it has been mandatory for gold artefacts and jewelry to be hallmarked. Registered jewelers can sell certified gold articles marked with hallmarks.
