- IEC Code Registration - Overview
The Import Export Code is a 10-digit code essential for Indian import and export businesses. Issued by the DGFT under the Ministry of Commerce, the trade does not require periodic renewal or filing. Importers need the Import Export Code to clear customs and process payments to foreign banks, while exporters require it for shipping goods and receiving payments. The import-export code number is crucial for any entity engaged in import or export activities in India.
- Advantages of IEC Code
● Global Market Access: Importer Exporter Code registration allows traders, including online e-commerce operators, to explore international markets.
● Government Schemes: Businesses can take advantage of various government initiatives like the Merchandise Export from India Scheme (MEIS) and the Service Export from India Scheme (SEIS).
● Simple Maintenance: There are no compliance requirements post-registration, making business operations easier.
● Streamlined Process: Obtaining an import-export code is straightforward and requires minimal documentation.
- Instances When IEC Code Is Necessary
The Import Export Code is necessary in the following scenarios:
● When customs clearance is needed for a shipment.
● When an importer makes overseas payments through banks.
● For exporters dispatching shipments at customs ports.
● When exporters receive foreign currency in their bank accounts.
- Import Export Code Validity
The Import Export Code is valid for a lifetime. Once obtained, it remains effective for all future import or export transactions, eliminating the need for renewal.
Important Points Regarding IEC Validity:
No Renewal Required: Unlike certain licenses or registrations, an IEC does not need to be renewed. Once obtained, it remains valid until the business is dissolved or the IEC is voluntarily surrendered.
Update Information: If there are any changes in the business details (such as the company name, address, or directors), it is important to update the IEC details with the DGFT.
Inactive IEC: If the IEC holder fails to use it for a long period (e.g., not conducting any imports or exports), the IEC could be flagged as inactive by DGFT. However, it can be reactivated by updating the required details.
Surrender of IEC: If a business ceases to engage in import/export activities, the IEC can be surrendered. Once surrendered, the business cannot use it for future import or export activities.
Compliance: Even though the IEC has no expiration date, businesses must ensure that they comply with customs and DGFT regulations to maintain its validity.
