Types of Entities Eligible for Import Export Code

To apply for an import export code, you must meet the following prerequisites:

A valid Permanent Account Number (PAN) issued by the Income Tax Department of India.

A bank account in the name of the firm or individual, as the import export code is issued to the applicant.

The business entity should be registered with the Registrar of Companies (ROC).

Submission of relevant documents, including identity proof, address proof, and business entity details to the DGFT office.

Registering for an Import Export code license online in India is simple and involves a few steps:

If you’re a new user, click ‘Register’ to create an account with your basic details.

Log in to the DGFT website using your registered credentials.

Click on ‘Apply for trade,’ which will redirect you to the import-export code application form.

Complete the application form by providing all required information, such as your firm’s name, PAN number, and bank details.

Pay the trade registration fee online using internet banking, a debit card, or a credit card.

After completing the application, uploading documents, and making the payment, review your application and click ‘Submit.’

You can track your application status online. Once approved, you will receive the trade license via email.

The following documents are needed for import Export Code License registration:

PAN card of the company (not required for sole proprietors).

Applicant’s PAN and Aadhaar card (or other identity proof).

Incorporation certificate or partnership deed.

Address proof (like an electricity bill, rent agreement, or sale deed).

Copy of a cancelled cheque or banker certificate for the current account.

How to Download Your IEC Certificate

Log in to the official DGFT website to access your IEC certificate. 

Go to the Services section and select IEC Profile Management. 

Scroll down to find “My IEC” and click on “Print IEC.” 

Follow the prompts to download your IEC certificate in PDF format. 

In addition to registering your IEC, it’s essential to regularly update all relevant business information. An Import Export Code (IEC) is not mandatory for service exporters unless they wish to access benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy.

The Import Export Code (IEC) is issued in electronic form (e-IEC) by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which operates under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India.

An Import Export Code (IEC) issued to an applicant is valid for a lifetime. However, it must be updated annually to prevent deactivation. If updates are made between April and June each year, there is no fee for the update.
